Week 4, Day 3 (SLJ)

Activity 1
On your blog, please tell us about your future plans (i.e. what you plan to do when you finish high school or college). Would you prefer to start working right away or to continue with your studies?

I would love to become a psychiatrist when I am older. During college I'd like to get a part-time job, probably at a supermarket, and work there for a few years. I would also like to attend university.

Aside from work, I want to travel and meet new people! I want to see the horizon in different countries! I really want to travel with someone and do many activities with them, see many sights with them, and discover many things with them!!

Activity 2
For this activity, imagine that you had the chance to write your own movie. What would it be about? Who would be your main characters? What are the important events that would take place?

Never-Ending
It was Francis's first time hanging out at her best friends' house. She desperately needed to use the bathroom and went looking around, forgetting to ask her friend for directions. She spends hours trying to find the bathroom but ends up finding rooms that shouldn't even be in the house.

Francis manages to find the bathroom, does her business, and leaves only to find that she is in another house. She goes back into the bathroom to find that it is a different room. She calls her friend and the two try to work out the situation together.

I tried to come up with a comedic yet relatable movie idea.

Activity 3
On your blog, tell us whether, or not, you would participate in 20 or 40 Hour Famine. If you have already participated in a 20 or 40 Hour Famine, please share your experience, including why you decided to participate and some highlights and challenges of the experience. To get full points, please provide at least six sentences.

If you don't know what a 40 hour famine is, it's when a person goes without something for an amount of time. It originally meant going without food but nowadays there are many options.

Yes I would participate in a famine if it's for charity. I would be raising money for those in need. I think this would be a great experience. It's also a great way to show my support!

The 40 hour famine this year is on 5th-7th June - perhaps you could sign up as a class or maybe a whole school at RPS. Keep up the great postings Riiana.

Kia ora Riiana,

Well done for participating in this years' SLJ programme, "Changemakers: People who have changed the world" - I like that you have taken initiative and gone and completed 3 activities in 1 blog post! Thanks for your response to Activity 1:’Future Plans’, I will respond to this activity.

A Psychiatrist! Wow what an awesome way to help other people! I appreciate people who care for those who may struggle with mental or emotional health and those with behavioural disorders. We need caring people like you to look out for our people! Good on you for seeking a job while you are at college. I started working when I was 13 years old working at my school tuckshop and then worked at a supermarket so I could give money to my parents for all they had done for me. Why do you want to start work at college? That is so awesome you want to travel!! I have been so lucky to travel around 16 countries in my life, where do you want to travel? :)

Lastly Riiana, I just wanted to congratulate you for finishing this years' SLJ programme - well done, this is such an amazing achievement and I'm really proud of you and I am sure your school will be proud of you too. I hope you have enjoyed most of the activities because we certainly appreciate your efforts and mahi that you have done throughout your journey with us! I hope you are proud of yourself, ka pai Riiana! :)

Ngā mihi,
Mani

Kia ora Ms Collins!

Ooo I might just consider it. Are you, or anyone you know, going to participate in this years' 40 hour famine?

Can't wait to read your response!

Hello Mani!

Woah, at 13? How was it working at your schools' tuckshop?

Mostly why I want to get a job during college is because my dad really wants me to get a part-time job at 15 and I guess it wouldn't hurt to experience something like that.

16 countries!? I hope to travel to that many countries. I would like to visit some place in France, Florida and Japan. What countries have you travelled to?

Thank you for commenting!

Mōrena Riiana,

Working at my school tuckshop when I was 13 was actually really cool. I learnt how to provide proper customer service and the smile to go along with it which actually set me up really well for every job I’ve had up till now. Oh and free food and drink every day wasn’t too bad either! :)

That’s pretty exciting but don’t be too hard on yourself about it! :) While I was in college, other than working at the tuckshop I would work at Countdown. However, I only did two shifts a week because at the end of the day I was still very young and I needed time for my studies and for other things I enjoyed, like sports and hanging out with my friends.

I am sure you will and wow what fantastic places to want to visit! I have no doubt that you will visit those places one day. The countries I have travelled to are; Australia, New Zealand (because I was actually born in Tonga), Tonga, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, France, Belgium, Austria, Czech Republic, Monaco, England, Italy, Vatican City, USA, Cook Islands. If you want to know about any of my experiences in those countries, ask away! :)

Ngā mihi,
Mani

Hello again Mani!

I'm glad you liked working at a tuckshop.

Thank you for the advice. I'll try not to push myself too hard.

WOWW you've visited Belgium? What was it like there? Also what was it like in Italy and Germany?

Looking forward to your response!! :D

Hi again Riiana!

Yes! Well I went in the winter when I visited Belgium, Italy and Germany so for the most part it was very cold! Nevertheless, I did not let that get in the way of having fun and taking part in some awesome experiences.

Belgium - I didn’t spend too much time here but it was such an incredible place to experience! I visited the city of Bruges and boy was it a dream. I felt like I was in a medieval town because it was full of the most beautiful castles. There were also people who were riding around on horses and carriages. While I was here I had the most incredible waffles with chocolate and the tastiest fries!

Italy - Food and history were the main things I wanted to delve into while I was here and it did not disappoint. From Leonardo da Vinci and world famous gelato in Florence, to fresh seafood pasta and riding Gondolas in Venice, to eating the most amazing pizza in Rome after visiting the Vatican, the Colosseum, the Trevi fountain and the Ancient city of Rome.

Germany - I stayed here most of the time and made a lot of cool friends! The most incredible sausages and my favourite meal Donner Box, which is essentially fries with kebab meat and onion topped with mayo and BBQ sauce. I was able to visit the most amazing places including the Berlin wall, the German Parliamentary building and the Town of Dresden.

If you haven’t already heard of the places I mentioned, I encourage you to look them up because they are simply amazing! Hope you enjoyed hearing about my experiences :)

Cheers,
Mani

Hi Riiana

Good job on finishing these SLJ activities. It's great that you have a goal to become a psychiatrist. It would be a good job to help people out with their mental issues. It's also great that you have a clear idea on what you want to do after school - at the moment I have no idea what I want to do when I finish. Raising money for charity would be great to help out those in need. When the famine comes around, I might also take part. If you decided to take part, what would you give up for 20/40 hours? Keep up the excellent work!

Daniel

Hey Daniel!

I'd be willing to give up devices and (probably) food! What are you willing to give up?

I hope you are able to find out what you want to do!!

Hi Riiana,
I liked how you said that you'd get a part time job during college, and become a psychiatrist when you're older. I also liked how you said that you would do a 40 hour famine because of all the money you'd raise for those who need it. What would you go on a famine from?
