Week 4, Day 4 (SLJ)

Activityt 1
On your blog, tell us how Twenty Seven Names got their name. Looking at their clothing brand, tell us whether you think this is a good name for them, or if they should change it to something.

The brand had originally started as Love Lies but due to copyright and not having the finance, they managed to come up with their current brand name; Twenty Seven Names. Their name comes from how many people had supported them when they were starting. If you want to read about this in more detail, here's the link.

I believe that this name suits their brand. I've never heard of people naming their brand because they were inspired by their supporters. The name just has that kind of ring to it that matches the style of the clothes they produce. I'm also a fan of the name.

Activity 2
On your blog, post an image (photo or screenshot) or your tapa design and describe what each part of your picture represents (means).
This is my tapa design. The flower in the middle is to represent my Samoan side. The patterns on the borders are to represent my Maori side.

Activity 3
For this activity, take a look at the Christchurch street art website and choose two different pieces of artwork. Look carefully at both pieces of art, and identify similarities and differences between the two. Post screenshots of the two different pieces of art that you have chosen.

This activity made me remember something. During our free time at technology Peni showed me a video of someone doing spray paint art. I was surprised at how they ended up with a whole art work (if that makes sense) just from spraying "random" colours and using a stencil. The video was very entertaining!
I've managed to find the video. Here it is; video link.

Kia ora Riiana,

Hope you’re enjoying your Summer Holidays! I would love to know what you have gotten up to over the past couple weeks. I spent most of my holiday with my friends and family in Mangawhai (1.5 hours north of Auckland).

Firstly well done on completing the Summer Learning Journey Programme Riiana! You should be so proud of this accomplishment. I cannot wait to read over all your blog posts.

What a beautiful piece of art work you have created! You must really enjoy drawing. Thank you for taking the time to draw and upload this wonderful tapa design.

WOW! I did not know that ‘twenty seven names’ was previously called ‘love lies’. Isn’t it crazy to think that your ‘original’ idea may not be original. In fact considering there’s 7.8 billion people in the world and anyone can place copyright on things. Did you take a look at some of twenty seven names clothing? I believe it’s quite expensive for clothing.

I wonder what makes clothes so expensive? I think it’s the time and effort gone into making each item. What do you think? Keen to hear your ideas!

Blog you later!

HI Riiana,
Love the learning activities. There are a lot of fashion companies that are now looking at environment, such as All Birds the shoe makers and one of my favourites both Australian though but both changing the way they make clothing due to the environment - Gormans and The Good Garment. Very expensive but very environmentally conscious about their garments. More and more of this is happening across the world. If you were going to start a clothing label (company) what would you call it and what would be your point of difference to other brands?
I love street art. I was lucky to watch some street artist in Christchurch and it blew me away how they take their ideas from their head to the brush and only did it in a small time frame in front of an audience. Did you know that the street artists in Glen Innes also did some work around the GI shops. You could go and watch them paint their work? If you were a street artist what message would your work say?
Love your tapa designs. Great thing about it is it shows both cultures and you can keep adding to it, it doesn't always have to be complete and can be ongoing. Well done Riiana!

Kia ora Georgia!

Thank you!

Yeah, I do enjoy drawing! I had only looked at what clothing they were selling, not the prices. I think the reason that clothes can get so expensive is because of the materials they're made out of. For instance, if they're made out of mulberry silk then the prices will definitely have to go up.

I hope that was clear enough.

Kia ora Riiana,

You make a really great point about how the prices for clothing pieces can be expensive because the materials they buy might be expensive. Another idea might be that these clothing brands don't participate in child labor or unsafe working conditions.

Brands such as Nike have a reputation for paying their workers $53 a month before overtime (working extra hours). Although I’m not sure if they have changed the way they work, after being caught out for this. You should look into this, it’s really interesting.

This is the last day for the Summer Learning Journey! You are so close and doing so well! You still have time to do all the activities. There are only a few people at Ruapotaka that have participated in the Summer Learning Journey. So you have more of a chance to win some awesome prizes!

You got this Riiana!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Hi Riiana,
I liked how you hand drew your tapa cloth, and represented both sides of your family with the different parts. I also liked how you explained what you thought about the company's name. Would you want to create your own company?

Hello Georgia,

Ohh I hadn't thought of that! I remember seeing a post talking about a womens clothing company that were overworking their employees and they weren't getting paid (or way below minimum wage). The workers went on strike and I think that they managed to compromise.

I will definitely look more into the issue.

Thank you! You have a fantastic weekend too!

Hey Alex,

As of right now I am not thinking about starting my own company. How about you? If so, what would it be about?

- Riiana :D
